MANIFESTO

Appearance-based demands are everywhere:
- ∙ In the earrings placed on us at birth
- ∙ In the requirement of “good appearance” for jobs
- ∙ In clothing sizes
- ∙ In advertising campaigns
- ∙ In social media algorithms
- ∙ In the comparisons among friends before a night out
- ∙ At nightclub doors
- ∙ In dating apps
- ∙ In TV programmes that mock people’s looks
- ∙ In the endless diets on the internet
- ∙ In fatphobic jokes at the family table
- ∙ In the fear of ageing
- ∙ In the way we relate to food
Caring for ourselves goes far beyond looking a certain way. That’s why we want to live free from appearance-based violence.
and for our looks to stop being a barrier to:
- ∙ Nourishing ourselves
- ∙ Getting dressed
- ∙ Seeking medical care
- ∙ Finding a job
- ∙ Going out
- ∙ Having sex
- ∙ Exercising
- ∙ Using social media
- ∙ Connecting with others
- ∙ Enjoying good mental health
